Arabella’s Colorful Little Girl Room

As I mentioned here in my foyer reveal, I will slowly be sharing the rooms of our house over the next few months, and today I’m so excited to show you my daughter Arabella’s colorful little girl room. This room was a compromise between Arabella’s taste and mine. As much as I love pink and fuchsia, I would not have painted the walls this vibrant pink, but since it is her room (and she is her mother’s daughter and has strong opinions), I figured I should honor her request for bright pink walls. The agreement was that I would pick the shade, and I settled on Benjamin Moore Pink Begonia. The undertones are more blue than red, which softens the color and prevents it from feeling too harsh.

My little princess also asked for a castle above her bed. At first she wanted me to paint one, but even a six year old (then five) can recognize a lack of artistic ability, and when I showed her my “practice” castle, we unanimously agreed that it would be better to buy something. Amazingly, Home Goods had this one with all of the colors of her bedding for the bargain price of $29.99! Once again, not my first choice for wall art, but perfect for a colorful little girl room!

You’ll notice below the eye sore boob light. Arabella recently decided this light is ugly and requested a chandelier. After a nice mama-daughter talk on being thankful for what we have and the proper way to ask for something, I said we would try to figure something out. If I didn’t agree so strongly with her, the conversation might have gone differently, but I want the flush mount gone as badly as she does, so I’m hoping to come up with a prettier fixture soon. My little lady also asked for feathers and crystals, so I’m thinking it’s going to end up being some sort of DIY project, as I haven’t seen too many feather chandeliers floating around the inter-web lately. 😉

The side tables were a $40 Facebook garage sale (pre-Marketplace) find I painted using a Benjamin Moore sample pot. I can’t find the can right now, but I know it’s hiding in the basement somewhere, so when I do, I’ll update the post with the color name.

You might recognize the lamp bases from my pre-One Room Challenge bedroom pictured here and here. I also repurposed the white lampshades that came with the lamp bases in our current bedroom design. The lamps are getting a little wobbly, so I’ll probably need to replace them soon, but for now they work!

I get a lot of questions about the flower tree. When I was pregnant with Arabella, I was desperately hoping for a girl, and I had a massive Pinterest board of colorful little girl room ideas for her nursery. I KNEW if I had a girl, I would have some sort of flower wall, but I didn’t trust my artistic abilities enough to paint one. So I found a cheap black wall vinyl on ebay and glued faux flowers to it.

When we built this house, Arabella was only 16 months old and I wanted to use all of the stuff from her previous room, so I reordered the vinyl going the reverse direction and recreated the same tree in her nursery here. For some reason when we decided to paint her walls pink, I couldn’t part with the flower tree, so I painted over it with the pink, and then slowly pulled the vinyl up, revealing the formerly grey walls (Benjamin Moore Nimbus – the same color through most of our house). But then I hated how dull the grey looked next to the pink, so I color matched our trim (Sherwin Williams Dover White) at Benjamin Moore and painstakingly hand painted over the gray. It. Took. Forever. Four coats to fully cover, and I am a perfectionist about this stuff! Frankly, I’m not sure it was worth it, but once I start a project, I’m not quitting, and I know Arabella loves it. The flowers are attached using tiny chunks of command strips so they don’t leave holes in our wall when I pull them off.

This little table and chair set are an old orange Ikea set my aunt graciously gave me (and painted for me!) when Kaden was born. They have served our family SO well. Kaden used to sit and play matchbox cars, build Legos, and color here.

Now Arabella plays Playmobil Princesses, has tea parties with her American Girl dolls, and creates many beautiful drawings here. The table is a bit beat up after nine years of use (those pieces of construction paper are covering lots of scratches and crayon marks), but it’s a great place for my sweet girl to be creative. It’s nothing a coat of paint can’t fix if I want to spruce it up down the road!

The other corner of the room contains an armoire we found on Craiglist when I was designing Arabella’s nursery. At our old house, we converted the sunroom into a bedroom for her so we could all be on the same level, and the lack of closet forced me to get creative. I’ve thought about replacing it with a more traditional dresser, but we pulled the hanging bar out and use the top of the armoire as a bookshelf, so it’s still really functional in this new colorful little girl room.

I don’t love the gap between the American Girl doll bed and the yellow shelf (a green Home Goods find I painted yellow) above it, but there was previously a changing table and then a dollhouse here, and I haven’t gotten around to updating it since we changed things up a bit. The little buckets are from Target’s dollar section and they hold hair bands and other accessories.

The art in the frames is from the classic Little Golden children’s book I Can Fly.

The bedding is the Keala line from PB Teen. The bed was converted from her crib and is the Sorelle Vista model. I believe an updated version is still available, but a similar and WAY cheaper model can be found here. The cute little white nightlight was a Target Pillowfort model I found at Goodwill for $2.99, but a similar one can be found here.

The monogram pillow is also from PB Teen, but has been discontinued. This is a similar look, and I think I like it even better.

The letters to the left of Arabella’s closet were DIY’s carried over from her nursery. The fabric I used in her custom made bedding was used as the background, and then I painted some wooden letters the same yellow as her shelf and hot glued them on. This was before I discovered the power of spray paint. Such a time saver!

While it wouldn’t be what I would have chosen for myself, I love that my daughter has opinions about her room (I was the same way!), and I feel like we found a great balance between her choices and mine. In a few years I will bring in some more sophisticated elements, but for now, this colorful little girl room feels perfect for a six year old!
