Deck Plans: Modern Preppy Outdoor Space

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I spent the month of May working on the One Room Challenge and painting the wood for our custom made deck railing. I have a few final paint touch ups I STILL haven’t gotten around to (I think I got burnt out!), and I plan on painting the supports and adding planter boxes to the bases, but the deck has been done for about four months now (where did summer go?!). Even though I probably won’t get this space fully designed until next spring, in the interest of sharing more “in progress” content, I wanted to show you my future design plans to turn this into a modern preppy outdoor space.

I’ve already purchased the bigger items (sofa, chairs, dining table, and umbrella), which have a modern feel, and allowed us to enjoy the deck all summer. I plan on bringing in the tropical preppy vibe with accessories. The tropical palm print pillows were a Home Goods find I transferred from my front porch, where they kept blowing away, to the deck. The rest of the design plans are loosely held, but I really want the modern preppy outdoor space feel. I probably won’t complete this space until spring now, because we’re almost at the “put your furniture away for winter” weather (the saddest thing about living in MN!), and I’m moving on to indoor projects, primarily my son’s room…

I LOVE a striped pattern, especially black and white, as it has a timeless and elevated feel, but is also fun and visually stimulating. I purchased the striped umbrella shown in the concept board, but unfortunately just two weeks later, my daughter left it up in a wind storm and it fell over and broke. Needless to say, I was pretty upset. I’ll have to look for a replacement next spring. The preppy stripes mixed with a tropical print work so well together, as the scale of the patterns is very different, and the neutral black and white lets the colors in the tropical print really shine. I’m excited to pull this design plan together in the future, but for now I’m sharing a source list in case you want to purchase any of these pieces for your own modern preppy outdoor space.

Modern Preppy Outdoor Space Source List

  • Sofa – Home Depot – so cozy, and the cushions dry extremely quickly
  • Table – Hayneedle
  • Chairs – Amazon – these are comfy too!
  • Umbrella – Gilt
  • Rug – Wayfair
  • Tropical Palm Print Pillows – Home Goods, but similar here
  • Pink Cabana Striped Pillows – Amazon

Here’s what the deck currently looks like… We love how it turned out, and I’m excited to get it fully designed in the spring!
