One Room Challenge – Week 3 (Painting and Progress!)

It’s week three of the One Room Challenge put on by Linda of Calling It Home and House Beautiful! Like many of the participants, I’m feeling pretty behind schedule. This was the state of my room on Sunday (forgive the bad iphone picture).

My Disastrous Room on Sunday

My black wall was done last summer, and the other three walls had one and a half coats of white paint on them by Sunday morning. After church and a few errands, I pulled up the Imagine Dragons’ “Evolve” album on Napster and started painting. I always have a “soundtrack” for different projects I’m working on… When I painted my fireplace white, I was hooked on James Arthur’s “Back from the Edge” album. Does anyone else listen to the same album on repeat over and over while they paint, or is that just me?

I painted for four hours and finished the third coat around 6:00 pm. If anyone has a trick to avoid needing a third coat of white paint, please let me know! We still slept in the basement for another two nights because the paint smell was pretty strong, and then finally moved back into our room last night… Yay!

Obviously the laundry situation was out of control. I fold laundry in our bedroom, and since we were displaced from our room, I just didn’t fold the laundry. Plus we were already really behind because of the three weeks of sickness. Our room was super chaotic, and basically awful.

Here’s what our room looks like now, after two and half hours of folding laundry today. I didn’t bother to move the nightstands back because we are replacing them anyway. I purchased the digital artwork file from HandmadeLUXArt on Etsy, and my father in law works for a printing company and generously printed it for me. I couldn’t wait and had to tape it up to see what it’s going to look like once I get the frame and hang it… I absolutely love it!

I found this bench at Marshalls on clearance for $50! I’m sure it was so cheap because it has a few stains on the top, but it will be getting some sort of makeover (I’m thinking fur, and possibly gold legs), so that didn’t stop me from snatching it up. The size and shape are just what I needed! The dresser is still floating about three feet away from the wall because we are going to mount the television, and then bring in the white dresser.

I pulled together some of the textiles that will be in the room, and I’m so excited about the way this room is coming together!I found that fabulous blanket on super clearance at Home Goods for $18. Home Goods is my happy place.

The white mirrors on my nightstands in the “before” picture have gotten a little makeover. When I bought them I knew they were a little too farmhouse for my taste, but I also knew that’s nothing that a little paint can’t fix. Paint fixes everything.I spray painted the Gold with Rustoleum’s Specialty Metallic Gold spray paint. It is my favorite! I always have a can or two around the house, just in case I get the urge to spray something gold. It happens more than you’d think.

After the spray paint cured, I applied a brown paint/water mix to the mirrors with a paper towel to give them a distressed and antiqued look. I love how they turned out! They are currently hanging out in our loft/playroom (total mess right now!), but I think they are going to be a great addition to this beachy glam bedroom I’m dreaming up.

Last week I mentioned that I was obsessed with Emily Henderson’s eclectic bedroom design, and I particularly loved her teal velvet wing back chair in the corner. I found a similar one from Wayfair at a fantastic price, but it’s out of stock until December!

I’m not sure what plan B is for the chair… I’ve thought about buying a cheap second hand one, but Adam isn’t too fond of that idea. I guess we’ll see what pops up!

I purchased these lamps on clearance from Kirklands a few months back, and while I loved the base, the lampshade felt a little wimpy to me, and the gold color was deeper and more bronze than I’d like (right is before, left is after). I made over one lamp using antique gold Rub ‘n Buff, and the color is a huge improvement. The palm print lamp shades were on clearance from Home Goods for $5 each, and I love how they totally transform the look and feel of the lamp!Easy Lamp Makeover with Rub 'n BuffI’ll be getting around to the other lamp next week!

Call me crazy, but I’m thinking about painting my dining room rug and moving it into the bedroom. Dining Room Teal RugIt’s four years old and it’s getting pretty worn out, plus it’s too small for the space. I purchased it when we had a smaller table, but once we got the larger trestle table, I discovered that there’s not enough room for chairs on the end. They hang half way off the rug and look really awkward. I’ve got my eye on something with a little different feel (fuchsia!) from Wayfair, and I’m hoping Santa brings it to me this year. 😉 I’ve never painted a rug before, so I have no idea what I’m in for… I’ll let you know soon if it’s a good idea or a terrible mistake!

What do you think about the direction the room is heading in? Thanks for checking it out, and be sure to pop back in to Calling it Home see what the other guest participants have been up to this week!

  1. Hi Kristen! I love the great colors you are bringing in with the art, lamps and pillows – it will be a great contrast against the clean black and white walls. I can’t wait to see how you pull it all together! I also appreciate the realness of your posts ; ) I always have a basket or two of laundry that needs to be put away!

    1. Aw, thanks Kristen! I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets embarrassingly behind on laundry sometimes (ok, most times!)… Just wanted to keep it real because some of my favorite blog posts ever are the behind-the-scenes “I’m not perfect” posts. Thanks for stopping by to check on the progress!

  2. Totally paint the rug! Just be prepared, it soaks up a lot of pony and will be stiff. So if you want plush…then no!

Looks like your plan is coming together nicely.

    1. Thanks for the info! I think I’ll go for it… Not much to lose, since the rug is looking pretty tired!

  3. Don’t freak, Kristen! I think we all feel a little behind. 😉

I’m already in love with all the colors, textures, and accents you’re planning on bringing into the room. You can just tell it’s going to be a dramatic, eclectic haven.

I often listen to podcasts while painting! Whether it’s podcasts or music, I do end up letting the playlist just roll into wherever the app takes me next. Putting down the paintbrush to find the next thing to listen to is just not something that realistically happens much!

    1. So glad I’m not alone in being behind! Thanks so much! I’m hoping I can bring an eclectic, yet cohesive look to the room. Podcasts are a good idea!
